Our Story

As goes the story with so many animal shelters, operating budgets are tight and difficult decisions must be made regarding the "worth" of an animal's life.  The cost to care for animals who are healthy is expensive, but adding in animals with special medical or behavioral needs can blow away a shelter's budget in the blink of an eye.  Sadly, when funding is low and unexpected expenses arise, it is the animals that pay the ultimate price.

Friends of Tri-Cities Animal Shelter (Friends of TCAS) is a local, all-volunteer 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to serving the lost and abandoned animals at Tri-Cities Animal Services (TCAS).  It is our goal that every animal passing through the doors into Tri-Cities Animal Services receives necessary care. We need YOUR HELP and invite you to join us in fulfilling this endeavor. Click below to see how you can help these special animals.

  • Chalet

Chalet has been at the shelter since 9/3/2024. She is a 2-year-old German Shepherd mix who was found on Columbia Drive.

She is a lovebug with her people. Chalet knows basic commands and even some tricks, like speaking on command. She is super eager to please those around her. She loves toys and cuddling with her humans.

She does have a few quirks, such as being reactive to some dogs and some resource guarding of her toys with other dogs. Also, when a stranger approaches her kennel, Chalet has a tendency to put on her “big tough” face and bark, which can make her seem intimidating at first. A good fit would be a home with plenty of love, playtime, and adventure.

  • Clover

Clover is a 4.5 year old Australian Cattle dog mix. She has been at the shelter since February 1, 2025. She spent weeks running loose across several miles in Kennewick evading capture. Finally, a well-meaning good Samaritan was able to catch her. After all the time fending for herself, it was clear Clover had been through a lot. She was underweight and suffering from painful skin infections. She was treated immediately and is now in good health. Clover is a very high energy dog and will need a family or doggie companion that can match her zest for life. She loves people and enjoys fetching toys in the yard. She will need a sturdy fenced yard and lots of love and patience to help her decompress and adjust to home life.

  • Stan

    Stan

Stan is a 3-year old Border Collie mix.  Stan has had a tough journey.  He arrived at the shelter on a bite hold after nipping a child in the group that found him.  Terrified and overwhelmed, Stan responded the only way he knew how: with defensiveness. Sadly, he had another bite incident more recently during a meet and greet, again with little to no warning.

Stan is struggling in the shelter environment. The noise, stress and constant new faces are a lot for him. We’re still learning what his exact triggers are, but we know he becomes highly protective of the people he bonds with.

Despite all this, there is another side to Stan - a side that wiggles with joy when he sees someone he knows and a side that leans in for affection, snuggles close, and visibly relaxes when he feels safe.

Stan will need a home without young children and an experienced and patient adopter.  Someone who understands fear-based behavior and won’t rush him.

  • Willy

Willy is a 2.5 year old Bull Terrier Mix. Willy’s story is one of heartbreak and resilience. When he first arrived at our shelter in 2023, he was just a puppy-full of hope and quickly adopted into what we thought would be his forever home. Sadly, this year Willy returned to us in devastating condition-severely emaciated and neglected.  It appeared he had been left in a crate, forgotten and unwanted.  With carefully feedings, vet care and love, he has regained his weight, strength and spirit. He is a gentle soul who loves walks, outdoor adventures or simply lounging in the yard with his person. He walks politely on a leash and is happiest just being near people who care for him.

Because Willy missed out on proper training as a puppy, he’ll need patience and consistency as he learns the ropes of potty training and basic manners. But what he lacks in training, he makes up for in sweetness and a forgiving heart.
